Snack Time: Let’s Make Salad in a Jar!

Snack Time: Let’s Make Salad in a Jar!

You’ve probably had salad in a bowl before. Probably even salad on a plate. But have you ever heard of salad in a jar?

Mason jars can be used for all sorts of things. You can drink out of them, and you can use them to pickle vegetables. Why not try using a mason jar to make salad?

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

Get an adult to help you gather all the ingredients together. You can use all kinds of things in your salad, but let’s make sure we have a few of the most important:

A cartoon image of lettuce.

What would a salad be without lettuce? This leafy green vegetable is probably part of most salads. Make sure to get plenty of it; enough to fill half of your salad jar!

A cartoon imago of tomato.

Is it a vegetable or a fruit? That’s a controversial topic, but what isn’t controversial is that tomatoes go great in salad! Bright and juicy, they bring a lot of flavor as well as some fun color to your salad.

A cartoon image of carrots.

Speaking of color, let’s add some bright orange carrots into the mix! Have your nearby adult help you slice up the carrot into small pieces, and add them into the jar. They say that eating plenty of carrots will help you see well at night…is that true?

After you’re done adding these three ingredients, put in some of your favorite salad dressing. Ranch, Caesar, Italian; any of them will work! It all depends on what kind of salad you like.

Step 2: Add Extras

Now it’s time to put in any extra ingredients before you shake it all up! Ask your nearby adult what else might be good to include: croutons, cheese, olives, small pieces of broccoli and other vegetables are all good choices.

Step 3: Shake Things Up

Now for the fun part! Put the lid on your jar and get to shaking! Make sure that the dressing gets all through your salad, and that the other ingredients are thoroughly mixed up.

Step 4: Bon Appetit!

Take the lid off your salad jar and grab a fork. It’s time to dig in! Now you know how to make a delicious salad any time, as long as you have ingredients and a jar. It’s easy, doesn’t make a big mess, and is a great choice for a fresh and healthy snack.
